Open, save and export

Choose File → Open… (Ctrl+O) to open a Modlumi project (.modl) or a SketchUp file (.skp). Modlumi frames the model in the view when it finishes loading.

On the desktop, you can also open a file at startup:

Terminal window
modlumi path/to/model.skp

Modlumi reads SketchUp files with their geometry, groups, components and materials.

To add a SketchUp model to the model you already have open, choose File → Import SketchUp…. The imported model follows the pointer like a paste; click to place it.

When you save a model that came from a SketchUp file, Modlumi asks where to save it as a .modl project. Your original .skp file is never changed.

Choose File → Save (Ctrl+S) to save your project, or File → Save As… (Ctrl+Shift+S) to save a copy under another name. Projects use the .modl format. Saving also stores the current view.

An asterisk (*) in the title bar means you have unsaved changes. If you open another file or close Modlumi with unsaved changes, it asks whether to save them.

In the browser preview, Save downloads the project instead.

Use Edit → Cut, Copy, Paste and Paste in Place:

Command Shortcut
Cut Ctrl+X
Copy Ctrl+C
Paste Ctrl+V
Paste in Place Ctrl+Shift+V

Paste attaches a preview to the pointer; click to place it, or press Escape to cancel. Paste in Place puts it back at exactly the same position, even inside a different group or component.

The clipboard keeps its contents when you open another file, so you can copy geometry from one model to another. It doesn’t copy geometry to other programs.

Choose File → Save to Image… to save the current view as a PNG image.

This is only available in the desktop app. You can also save images from the command line, which is useful for scripts and automation:

Terminal window
modlumi model.skp --snapshot-viewport view.png

--snapshot-viewport saves just the 3D view; --snapshot-ui saves the whole window. Modlumi closes after saving the images.
